We have made a list of some of our favourite Wedding Photo & Ceremony locations in Queenstown that are:
Free or very affordable ($200 DOC Permit)
Beautiful for photos
Secluded away from crowds and tourists
The Shotover River
Lupins between mid-November and late-December
Lupins in Tekapo is easily one of our most requested spots, but did you know that you can get wild Lupins in Queenstown too? This spot under the Shotover River bridge is only 5 minutes drive away from Queenstown Airport, and has epic views of the Remarkables while also surrounded with Lupins in Summer.
Skippers Canyon
Skippers Canyon Road is sometimes dubbed as “The World’s 3rd Most Dangerous Road” and access by rental cars are prohibited. The spot we use however, is a lot safer than it sounds (it is one of our favourite places) and there is enough space on the side of the road to park three cars.
This spot is actually a part of Coronet Peak, so if you are considering this spot it is easy enough to include the other side of Coronet Peak into the schedule.
Get here around an hour before sunset for epic golden hour photos.
Kelvin Heights, facing South
Kelvin Height is the spot for locals - tourists don’t tend to wander around here.
The big mountain you see in the background here is the Remarkables, and if you look over to the right you will see Cecil Peak across Lake Wakatipu too.
This spot can get quite windy, as Queenstown tends to get mostly Southerly winds.
Kelvin Heights, facing North
Kelvin Height is the spot for locals - tourists don’t tend to wander around here. The shore facing North will have Queenstown Hill and Deer Park Heights in the background. This is our preferred spot for windy days, as the tall pine trees to the South block out most of the southerly winds.
Glenorchy Wharf
Glenorchy is approx 45 mins drive away from Queenstown Central, with various secluded spots in the area facing towards Lake Wakatipu and Mt Bonpland to the North. For a peaceful setting with no tourists or visitors getting in the way, Glenorchy is a suitable spot for couples wanting serenity and intimacy for their elopement Wedding Ceremony.
Moke Lake
Moke Lake is a peaceful and scenic campsite just 15 minutes drive from Queenstown central. With deep mountain valleys and clear fishing lakes, Moke Lake is one of the more popular spots for Elopement Weddings.
The land is owned by the Department of Conservation, and we can help to organise a Wedding Permit for this spot for NZ$200.
